There is a club here on Xavier’s campus. This club is Alliance, a club for gays,lesbians,bisexuals and transgender students. Now with that sentence and that title, people who read this are like “oh, he hates gays”. And before I actually get to what grinds my gears, I want to say that I support a nationwide support for gay rights. I want to see the end of Prop. 8 in California. And I want all my gay friends to have every right that I have and I hope one day that my children (if I have children) to never imagine a world where different groups of people had different sets of rights.
So if that written down I am going to rant about something that has been pissing me off. This club Alliance has been putting on a protest against this artist who has been known to write/sing about gay bashing. Now as I said before hatred towards anyone is uncalled for, there is no need for hate in this world. But this is America, a country that has always been pushing the idea of inalienable rights for everyone. Our constitution says, in the first amendment, that we have the right to free speech. Everyone has the right to say what they want to say as long as they do not hurt themselves or hurt others in the process. And as long as you don’t hurt yourself or hurt others and just keep it to words only then say all that you want and as loud as you want. Because if I don’t want to hear it, I wont listen. This artist wrote one song, ONE SONG, in 1988 that mentioned gay bashing. There has been no evidence of violence happening because of his concerts. And if gays are being hurt in his native land, change the country not the musician. So to Alliance, give it a break. This just makes you the most closed minded open minded group I have seen. If you bash others how will they accept you. You can not demand respect and rights, if you disrespect others and take away their rights. Maybe instead of canceling his show, why don’t you boycott it, offer reasons for people to not support this musician. Because he can say what he wants, but no where does it say you have to listen/support that person. By saying “oh he hates what I like, he needs to be banned” no, come on, this did not work for Tipper Gore in her fight against music in the 80s and this is not going to help you now. So please, just let it go. Focus on making laws change because if you attack every musician or artist that pisses you off then you have a long war ahead of you. Because you will be able to change the world but you wont be able to change every person. Even though I wish you could change everyone.
